and reward
Filling the
other's cup
Feeling sorry for poor Rabbi Jusya, Ephraim slipped some coins
under his door every day. And he realized that the more money he
gave Jusya, the more he earned.
Ephraim remembered that Rabbi Baer was Jusya's master, and thought:
"if I am so well rewarded by giving to the disciple, just imagine
how much I would earn if I decided to help his master."
He traveled to Mezritch and showered Rabbi Baer with gifts. From
that moment on his fortune began to wither away and he lost almost
everything.
Intrigued, he sought out Jusya and told him what was happening.
- It's very simple - said Jusya. - As long as you were giving
without thinking about who was receiving, God did the same too.
But as soon as you started picking out prominent people to receive
your donations, God began to do the same thing too.
